Hem Sustainability Environmental and climate responsibility

Environmental and climate responsibility

We are actively working to reduce our impact on the environment and climate and to ensure sustainable development in all our operations. Of course, we always comply with the minimum requirements set forth in laws and regulations. We have identified four key areas to which we pay particular attention when it comes to reducing our environmental impact. These are: the use of spare parts, the use of chemicals, energy consumption, and waste management.

Werksta Group’s climate goals have been approved by the SBTi

An important step in Werksta’s journey toward reducing carbon dioxide emissions is to set science-based targets for the company’s own emissions reductions. In the short term, Werksta has committed to reducing absolute greenhouse gas emissions under Scope 1 and 2 by 63 percent, and greenhouse gas emissions under Scope 3 by 37.5 percent by 2035, compared to the base year of 2022. The targets have been validated and approved by the SBTi and are in line with the goal of halving total emissions.

We are continuing our efforts to reduce our carbon dioxide emissions throughout the value chain.

Werksta Sweden ISO Certifications

All of Werksta Sverige’s workshops are certified to ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015 for quality and environmental management (
) by the accredited certification body A.g.R Certification Sweden AB.

Red is now green, too — Werksta launches green repair

Since we are dedicated to repairing what has broken, sustainability is the foundation of our business. But we want to go further than that. We want to be a leader in sustainability within the claims industry. That’s why we’re wholeheartedly committed to climate-smart products and practices. We train our staff, engage our customers, and track key performance indicators for our sustainability efforts.

We are working to reduce our carbon footprint and environmental impact throughout the entire repair process, from start to finish—from inspection to how we repair, what materials we use, how we manage waste, and how we recycle materials. We call this Green Repair.

Digital photo assessments save time, money, and carbon dioxide

A digital photo inspection involves the customer taking photos or videos of the damage with their cell phone. This means one less trip to the repair shop. It saves time, money, and carbon emissions. Compared to a visit to the repair shop, a digital photo inspection saves:

  • CO2 (kg): 4.1 kg*
  • Travel cost: 45 SEK
  • Duration: 90 minutes

*Average duration per photo inspection: approximately 90 minutes and 40 km. Average CO2 emissions are approximately 103 g/km. Over a distance of 40 km, this results in 4.1 kg of CO2 emissions. Fuel consumption is 7 l/100 km, and the price of one liter of fuel is 16 SEK/l. The cost of a 40-km trip is approximately 45 SEK.

Used and refurbished replacement parts save up to 82% CO2e

The largest portion of the carbon footprint comes from the repair process itself. This is also where the greatest potential for savings lies. The chart shows how much we can reduce our environmental impact by using used and refurbished replacement parts.

The climate impact of the typical damage is calculated using a life-cycle analysis that takes into account all resources, from raw material production to waste management. The typical damage refers to the repair of the right front fender, front outer panel, right headlight, and hood on a 2019 Volvo V60, including painting and rust protection.

Waste management

Effective material recycling reduces costs for us and our partners, while also benefiting the climate. Together with our partner, we set clear goals for waste management and track recycling rates, sorting rates, and material recovery.

Metal, cardboard, glass, rubber, and electronics—all waste is sorted, and as much as possible is recycled. Of course, we handle hazardous waste, such as chemicals, properly.

  • Combustible waste
We sort all combustible waste, such as cardboard, glass, and rubber, and recycle as much as possible.
  • Mixed scrap
We sort all mixed scrap—such as metal, aluminum, and electronics—and recycle as much as possible
  • Hazardous waste
We, of course, handle non-standard waste—such as chemicals—properly.

Most of what we do produces carbon dioxide. The goal is to minimize emissions.

Werksta repairs approximately 100,600 cars per year, and an increasing number of them are repaired using Green Repair. Based on the proportion of Green Repair repairs, used parts, and photo inspections, we currently save approximately 13,400 metric tons of CO2e per year. This is roughly equivalent to:

31,900 car trips

by gas-powered car between Gothenburg and Madrid.

12.7 million milk cartons

including production and packaging materials.

13,000 flights

Stockholm–Rome, round trip.

Our environmental responsibility also means

Competent staff play a key role

Our employees are trained in circular thinking, which fosters engagement and generates new ideas on how we can become even more sustainable. We regularly train our staff in environmentally friendly repair methods, such as plastic repairs. Our expertise in repairing electric and hybrid cars is also constantly evolving, and we are an authorized repair center for Tesla in Sweden.

We measure our energy consumption

We set clear goals for energy consumption in our production. By paying close attention to our day-to-day operations and training our staff, we have already achieved significant benefits. For example, we are replacing the fluorescent lighting in our workshops with LED fixtures.

Use of chemicals

By streamlining the number of suppliers of our chemical products, we have been able to reduce chemical waste in our workshops. In 2016, Werksta had more than 250 different suppliers of goods and chemicals. That number has now been reduced to about ten. This represents a 96% reduction in the number of suppliers . More controlled purchasing ensures that there are no duplicate products on our shelves; turnover is high, so the goods do not become obsolete. This is also reflected in smart storage shelves that save our employees time.

We only buy from suppliers who take responsibility

It is important to us that all the subcontractors we work with are committed to sustainable development and minimize their environmental impact in their own operations as well. This is also reflected in our choice of chemical suppliers. We purchase products from environmentally certified companies that are pioneers in their field when it comes to environmental issues. We also take great care to ensure that the chemicals we use are safe and recyclable. For example, when it comes to paints, we have focused our purchases on products with the lowest possible environmental impact. We also use only eco-friendly products when washing cars.
